I’m an avid bird photographer and traveler-I’ve been to 40 countries, many with great birds! Because I’m also a classical fan and former performer, I’ve reviewed streaming services that emphasize classical music. The Skylum Team has been working hard to bring you a satisfying editing experience with Luminar Neo. I’ve attended trade shows of Microsoft, Google, and Apple and written about all of them and their products.

Prior to my current role, I covered software and apps for ExtremeTech, and before that I headed up PCMag’s enterprise software team, but I’m happy to be back in the more accessible realm of consumer software. I was privileged to byline the cover story of the last print issue of PC Magazine, the Windows 7 review, and I’ve witnessed every Microsoft win and misstep up to the latest Windows 11. I’ve been reviewing software for PCMag since 2008, and I still get a kick of seeing what's new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. PC hardware is nice, but it’s not much use without innovative software. The sample shots all had a floor or ground, but I was able to use it effectively in a shot that had no floor: this West Mexican Chachalaca up a tree. Luminar's co-founder, Dima Sytnik, demonstrated for PCMag the AI Relight tool, which lets you selectively alter lighting in the near and far parts of a photo based on a 3D depth map the program creates. Along with all the standard photo adjustment tools, you also get background removal, dust and spot removal, and a wealth of effects and texture overlays. Neo also adds Photoshop-like layer capabilities complete with blending modes, along with the gee-whiz sky replacement tools we've come to expect from Skylum, which had this type of tool well before Adobe did. Neo packs features like AI Relight and automatic power line and dust removal into a pleasing updated interface, all of which is powered by a new, faster core codebase underneath. Ukraine-based Skylum (formerly MacPhun) today upgraded its slick, easy-to-use photo-editing application with Luminar Neo, which adds unique AI editing tools.
